The road from Bruges to Luxembourg is a journey through time. Historic cities on canals, cobblestone streets with belfries, over there 47 bells are chiming, over here someone is reciting a lovely medieval poem. Between the romanticism of Bruges and the charm of Luxembourg’s old medieval city, this is the place where modern Europe meets the allure of the Middle Ages.

One of the nicest Sunday markets in Belgium. There was a grain market here as early as the 17th century. Today, people come to buy artisanal cheeses (taste the Herve), free-range eggs, local charcuterie and sirop de Liège, made from pears, apples and dates (our own sort of Proust’s madeleine).

Hotel and restaurant in a village. Château de Vignée, on the banks of the Lesse, is the bucolic setting chosen by Kwinten Boelen to share his vision of the Ardennes over the seasons. While the pretty manor house and its 18th-century farmhouse were undergoing a facelift, the young chef took the time to cultivate his vegetable garden and forge links with local hunters. Game, vegetables, and so on. It is not exoticism he seeks, but the most natural way to make each ingredient shine. This sense of purity and simplicity is also evident in the discreet yet cosy atmosphere of the dining room as well as in the deep tones that colour the spacious rooms — contemporary echoes to the surrounding nature. ...
