20 miles from Victoria Falls

Upstream from the Victoria Falls, on the banks of the powerful Zambezi River, you find paradise on earth. Royal Chundu, with its two magnificent lodges in the middle of the bush far from the madding crowd, is the place to enjoy peace and quiet in what remains as an untamed corner of the earth. The River Lodge is on the riverbank while the Island Lodge is located on an island, both offering spacious suites with a colonial décor reminiscent of the splendour of the times of the early explorers. Returning from their excursions, guests can sample divine spa treatments with natural African ingredients or enjoy Zambian cuisine, watching stars light up the sky over the river.

Our commitments

Developing local communities is essential for this property, as the two live in synergy.
The spirit of Zambia is in the heart and soul of the staff members you meet since they are all from neighbouring villages, working in this property ensures the future of their families. Their children go to a school founded by the property, where tablets replace all-too-rare books. In order to source fresh produce, the Royal Chundu devised the 4 km rule, highly effective for their carbon footprint. Fruit and vegetables must be grown within this radius. For that, it provides seeds to anybody who would like join the scheme. The biotope is also carefully monitored, so migrating birds come here to lay eggs and fish to reproduce.

Victoria Falls

When it comes to the Victoria Falls, there is no other sight on the continent that better exemplifies the pure might and magnificence of nature than this, the largest waterfall on earth. The Zambian side offers something wholly unique in the drier months when the Zambezi is at its lowest, between August and January as Devil’s Pool at Livingstone Island becomes accessible to visitors brave enough to swim in this natural infinity pool on the cliffs of the Falls.

Privacy and Relaxation

Escape to your suite, whether tucked away between the trees on the mainland or on the edge of Katambora Island, for private spa treatments with natural African ingredients or intimate meals beside the river. Sink into a sunset bubble bath on your suite’s deck at Island Lodge, as candles and stars shed the only light on your secluded setting. For something truly spectacular, dine under the stars at a remote island, a short boat trip away. As this calmer stretch of the upper Zambezi calls for, this is your chance to reconnect with the pace of nature, with yourself and loved ones.

Zambezi life

Royal Chundu reserves a private stretch of the Zambezi for its guests - 15 kilometres of the 3,540 kilometre long stretch. As you enter through the magnificent walkway of River Lodge, a slice of blue peeks out in greeting, luring you to the calm upper reaches of Africa’s fourth-longest river. Here, at the meeting place of Zimbabwe and Zambia, hippopotamuses and crocodiles frolic beside monitor lizards and African fish eagle. Occasionally, buffalo, zebra, giraffe or elephant make their way down to the banks. Join them on a kayaking adventure or a sunset cruise, or try your hand at catch and release fishing.
