During low tide, enjoy an unforgettable guided walk along the coast. You'll leave for three hours of walking to discover the many animals inhabiting this protected area in the De Hoop nature reserve. Be amazed by the colors and diversity of species: anemones, starfish, abalones, and sea urchins, not to mention impressive mussel beds. Keep your ears and eyes open and you might be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of an octopus hunting amongst the rocks.
Rediscover your adventurous spirit and set off on a two to three-hour hike through the De Hoop nature reserve. In the heart of fynbos landscapes, typical vegetation in the Cape province, you can see herds of eland, Bontebok, or mountain zebras, not to mention many species of birds. A real haven for nature and wilderness enthusiasts.
For a fun and exciting experience, set off—with a group of friends or family—up the golden sand dunes in the De Hoop nature reserve. Enjoy breathtaking views from the summit, then brave an exhilarating ride as you slide down the sand. To familiarize yourself with this activity, you can take it in steps: start seated on the board before trying to stand and slide. At the end of the afternoon, having had your fill of new experiences, you'll savor an aperitif whilst taking in an incredible sunset.
Mountain biking is one of the best ways to explore the De Hoop nature reserve, which is a real temple of biodiversity. With or without a guide, you can follow the many safe, well-marked trails. Along the way, you're sure to see wandering elands, antelope, and mountain zebras. Enjoy a timeless moment in the heart of breathtaking scenery.
The De Hoop nature reserve is renowned for being one of the best places for land-based whale watching. Right outside De Hoop's Morukuru Family Lodges, the bay is completely protected and an ideal environment for these fascinating giants. The best time of year for enjoying this magnificent spectacle is between July and the end of October. You can then admire the extraordinary ballet of these cetaceans from the beach, the sand dunes, and even your suite. Moments of pure magic!
