make the most of Sacred Valley

At an altitude of 2800 m, colours are brilliant: the blue of the sky, the red of the earth and a fragmented mosaic created by a profusion of flowers. Sol & Luna is inspired by this luminous setting and is a paean to the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Its architecture is a mix of avant-garde and primitive Peru, its clay walls are a backdrop to both contemporary and traditional Peruvian art, and its stones, beams and bricks from the valley find their natural home here. Its mouthwatering cuisine also draws its inspiration from local gastronomy, yet with a contemporary twist. Sol & Luna is close to archaeological sites and offers a doorway to this lost civilisation.

Our commitments

The Patagona Gigas, the largest type of hummingbird in the world, choose for their home the 4000 trees that stand on this property.
And they are not alone: about thirty other species have done the same; a credit to this property’s respect for the environment. The Polylepis, an endangered tree species, has also made a home here. The property chooses small neighbouring organic producers for its suppliers, helping them to develop. It also founded the Sol y Luna foundation, now a major player in local development. The foundation set up an intercultural school where children from neighbouring communities are taught many subjects including nutrition and foreign languages.

Free flight over the Andes

The wind in the mountains, with its dynamic behavior, creates ideal opportunities to fly over landscapes with contrasting valleys, fields and glaciers. Since ancient times, birds have always been related to freedom. Their capacity to traverse the skies has made each one of us envy their wings and their ability to fly. Flying over the Andes like the majestic Condor, is a unique experience worth living.

Peruvian Paso Horse

One of the most important traditions in Peru, is the Peruvian Paso Horse, known world-wide for its soft pace and obedience. From our stables, one can discover the kindness of an animal that has developed characteristics for half a century: the lateral movement of its extremities in four tempos and the upright position of the head can smoothly take us along the paths of the Sacred Valley or rejoice us with their harmony to the rhythm of a marinera, national dance of Peru, during a presentation of their qualities in our garden.

Quad Bikes (ATV’s)

Kick up some dirt as your off-road vehicle rolls along mountain trails past fields of indigenous flowers crisscrosses overhead in the blue sky by kaleidoscopic birdlife. Take in breathtaking views over the Sacred Valley and wave hello to farmers tending their crops as we zoom across this exhilarating landscape.

Mountain Biking

Two wheels is the most exhilarating way to see the most of the Land of the Incas, at the closest perspective. Cycle along Andean terraces, through Spanish colonial villages, around Inca ruins, into highland communities in their vibrant finery and through fields of wildflowers, corn and quinoa. Our cycle routes take riders among the villages of Yucay, Huayllabamba and Urquillos, where the Incas found the best cultivation land in the Sacred Valley.

Kayak

Snow-capped Andean peaks surround crystal clear and calm Huaypo Lake, offering the ideal conditions for a relaxed paddle in the refreshing landscape.

Horseback Riding

Known for their docile nature, Peruvian Paso horses offer a comfortable, relaxed way to explore the Sacred Valley. Ride along our neighboring communities of Palcaraqui and Pumahuanca just as a local might do, or take longer jaunts into countryside to the fascinating landscape at Moray and the Spanish colonial village of Maras. The Peruvian Paso horse remains closely connected with the Criollo, or ‘creole,’ culture that took root here in the New World and is still expressed through music, customs and food. In-depth culture and horse training programs initiate our guests into this vanishing world.

Support Children of Urubamba

In 1998, Petit Miribel and Franz Schilter arrived in Urubamba-Cusco, willing to do work that would benefit the children of the valley. They started by supporting various local schools and built the Sol y Luna School in 2009. Since then we the association Sol y Luna has been developing our a mission of working for the education and inclusion of the children of Urubamba and the surrounding communities.  Students receive a full or partial scholarship and the association provides education, transportation, snacks and lunch, creative workshops, psychological support, school for parents, integration trips, intensive English programs, and Quechua classes.  In 2015, Paqari was created for children with different abilities. We offer therapies according to their needs, and we include them progressively in regular classes and in the community. As we wish to continue growing, we opened in December 2018 our own shelter, Sol y Luna Home, a permanent home for children who are abandoned or victims of domestic violence. We can achieve this, thanks to the great support we receive from the Hotel Sol y Luna and the generosity of guests, friends and benefactors. During your stay at Sol y Luna, we encourage you to visit our school and shelter. Spending time playing with children is a very rewarding experience for them and for yourself.
