medieval Tuscan hamlet

Ferragamo family-owned
2700-acre organic estate

On this superb 2,700-acre Tuscan estate, time seems to stand still. Owned by Ferruccio Ferragamo, Il Borro is a charming oasis reminiscent of a medieval hamlet comprising a 19th century villa, farm, and outbuildings. Here in this landscape, typical for the region, excellent wines and organic olive oils are produced using traditional methods. Whether exploring the hamlet's winding lanes, relaxing by the infinity pool, enjoying a treatment at the Il Borro spa, or savoring the flavors of the refined cuisine at the Osteria Del Borro, an original and unique experience awaits. Authenticity, respect for the environment, culture, and the promotion of excellence are the foundations of Il Borro's sustainable philosophy.

Our commitments

Il Borro offers its guests accommodation ranging from well-appointed, charming suites to the luxurious and imposing main villa: Dimora Il Borro. For some twenty-five years, it has been lovingly restored by Ferruccio Ferragamo and his family, whose aim is to preserve the medieval character while offering thoroughly modern facilities.
The Il Borro’s approach to sustainability is thoroughly modern too. The estate now generates its own electricity, from a field of photovoltaic solar panels. These can produce about 2 MWh a year—enough to power over 500 households. This is over three times the main hotel’s needs and the estate returns renewably-generated energy back into the grid. Four of the estate’s villas have been converted to low-energy properties, where a combination of insulation, solar panels, and heat pumps (which generate green geothermal energy), have drastically cut both consumption and emissions.Water consumption is carefully managed too: the estate’s lakes are used as reservoirs to store rainfall over the year, which is used for both farming and irrigation.

Horse riding

I have always been passionate about horses and that's why I organise horse riding tours. This diverse and surprising estate is a delight to explore on horseback. The countryside, the perfumes and the colours of Il Borro change along with the seasons. There is always something new to discover, even for me who has spent my holidays here since childhood! All outings inevitably lead to Poggio Piano where a sophisticated picnic prepared by the Osteria Il Borro can be enjoyed in the unspoilt peaceful countryside. We want our guests to enjoy the good life in the stunning surroundings of unforgettable Tuscany.

The artisans of the medieval village

I love accompanying our guests to the medieval village - it's a really rewarding experience. I never get tired of this kindly, serene atmosphere in which highly creative local artisans explain our traditions with such warmth and passion. The village's artisans are happy to share the secrets of their crafts with our guests. We arrange painting, ceramics, embroidery and jewellery-making classes. A unique experience that allows our guests to discover our village's ancient history, its pace of life, its tranquillity and its day-to-day activities. Our guests can also go home with the most authentic souvenirs Il Borro has to offer.
