architecture by Jean Nouvel

route des Châteaux
celebrates Nouvelle-Aquitaine cuisine
panoramic view

The Saint-James occupies buildings designed in 1989 by the famous architect Jean Nouvel. They nestle in the delightful little village of Bouliac, in a garden fragrant with lemon trees and antique roses. Inspired by the old tobacco drying lofts, four pavilions, linked by a gallery, create a modern pure space. Far away, you can see the Landes of Gascogne forest, the biggest collection of maritime pines in Europe. The gourmet cuisine is one of the major attractions of the Saint James: the chef serves cuisine which is full of flavour and based on local market ingredients, rounded off by the selection of wines from an outstanding cellar and panoramic views of Bordeaux.

A swimming pool among the vineyards

What better way to enjoy a view of Bordeaux than from among 950 grapevines and four buildings designed by Jean Nouvel and inspired by tobacco-drying sheds? The hotel's 25-metre black swimming pool is a true haven of peace where you may luxuriate and relax. Make this hiatus exceptional by ordering a glass of Lillet, an aperitif typical of the Bordeaux region, and a snack prepared by our star-rated Chef, Nicolas Magie. The Saint-James is known to locals as Le Balcon de Bordeaux ('The Balcony of Bordeaux'). Come discover why the name is so very fitting!

A unique experience!

Be surprised. Everything you think you know about hotels vanishes into thin air as soon as you step through the door. Starting with the bar, which is home to some great design classics: chairs and sofas by Verner Panton and Charles Eames....Not forgetting the stunning Bergère Louise Crusoé chair, designed by Bleu-Nature, like a nest perched in the trees. When it comes to the rooms, the famous architect Jean Nouvel chose to highlight white, a symbol of purity and simplicity. The windows are stripped down, adorned only by the views they offer of nature. The bed treats you to a breathtaking spectacle. And for good reason: they change height from one room to the next, offering you uninterrupted views out over the vines once you lie down. Sleeping at the Saint-James is quite an experience!

An insight into food culture

As soon as it opened, the Saint-James began to focus on culture, arts, architecture and design. With the choice of Jean Nouvel as its architect, of course. But also by commissioning the sculptor César to inaugurate the first sixteen 100-square-metre plots of vines planted on the hotel’s grounds in 1989. Then, over the years, the gallery that links the 18th-century farmhouse to the pavilions has been transformed and converted into a space dedicated to the arts. Multiple exhibitions of paintings, sculptures and photographs are held here every year.
