former convent

the outskirts of Avignon
terroir-driven cuisine
wisteria garden

Le Prieuré in Villeneuve-lez-Avignon, tucked away in the mediaeval village, with its cottage garden and its trailing wisteria, emanates a rare charm. Jean-André and Geneviève Charial, who also own two properties in Les Baux-de-Provence, say that this former convent epitomises silence and relaxation. In the different rooms and suites contemporary style meets ancient tradition. The menu also pays tribute to the region, with dishes such as duck foie gras with Gariguette strawberries from Nîmes and pot-roasted Costières wood pigeon with fresh sage. Le Prieuré’s mouth-watering cuisine is served in surroundings which bring all the senses to life.

Our commitments

The white stones, green shutters, and flagged terrace of Le Prieuré, a hotel and restaurant near the ancient city of Avignon, emanate an easy French charm. To add to the natural look and feel of its exterior, the restaurant has installed six, meter-high planters on its terrace. Here, it grows a range of fresh produce which is varied carefully according to the season.
The list of herbs, vegetables, and fruits cultivated so far, is a long one and includes cabbages, cherries, chives, coriander, pink and white variegated eggplants, lettuces, parsley, miniature sweet peppers, beefsteak tomatoes, and strawberries. The initiative has proved highly successful with diners, especially children, who delight in the chance to inspect plants closely in their raised beds. Guests are invariably keen to tour the planters to see what’s in season and, if the variety’s right, do some impromptu tasting. Le Prieuré’s team feels that, in a small way, the initiative is helping its customers reconnect with the origins of their food.

From the earth to the stars

Enjoy breakfast with your family on the terrace of Le Prieuré and set off for an educational discovery of the papal charterhouse. A giant touchscreen there gives you access to its historical and artistic archives. If you reserve your picnic basket the day before at Le Prieuré, you can enjoy it among the scrubland of the Mourgues hillside before visiting the city's planetarium. You might finish the day at Fort Saint André. On Mondays in July, and on Mondays and Wednesdays in August, enjoy a guided tour at nightfall with a tour guide.'
