From its home in the heart of Bordeaux, Saint-James is the ideal starting point for exploring one of the oldest and most prestigious wine-making areas in the world. Taste the diversity of the vast terroir of Gironde, made up of six wine regions with distinct attributes. With the opportunity to visit wine estates in Bordeaux, Saint-Emilion, Médoc, Blaye, Graves, Sauternes and Entre-Deux-Mers, and to familiarize yourself with the subtleties of each appellation, you will be spoiled for choice.
Gastronomy, some say, is the art of sharing. That’s why our chefs are so keen to share their passion for the region and its produce with amateur cooks, young and old, beginner or experienced. To embark on a culinary odyssey or explore a classic from French cooking, join Côté Cours, the cooking workshops led by the Saint-James team. Discover trade secrets and useful techniques from professionals, and give free rein to your talent in a friendly and empowering setting.
The estate contains a genuine treasure: an organic vineyard of some 13 acres/5 hectares, exclusively composed of Merlot. With some 950 vines that produce between 400 and 600 bottles per year, this is a producer that’s small in size, but big in reputation. Renowned oenologist Stéphane Derenecourt oversees the cultivation, vinification and harvest of the House vintage. Served exclusively in the hotel bar and restaurant, it perfectly complements the carefully conceived dishes on the menu.
What better way to enjoy a view of Bordeaux than from among 950 grapevines and four buildings designed by Jean Nouvel and inspired by tobacco-drying sheds? The hotel's 25-metre black swimming pool is a true haven of peace where you may luxuriate and relax. Make this hiatus exceptional by ordering a glass of Lillet, an aperitif typical of the Bordeaux region, and a snack prepared by our star-rated Chef, Nicolas Magie. The Saint-James is known to locals as Le Balcon de Bordeaux ('The Balcony of Bordeaux'). Come discover why the name is so very fitting!
Whether you're a motorcycle enthusiast or just fancy the idea of being a biker for a day, this suite is for you! With a surface area of 45 m², a Harley Davidson provides the decor. The panoramic views of Bordeaux and its vineyards from the private terrace make this amazing suite even more perfect.
"You will be warmly welcomed upon arriving at our authentic 'village bistro', Café de l’Espérance, located at the heart of Bouliac. Discover our special starter and dessert buffets, all highly recommended by our regulars! Savour your choice of meat, grilled on the barbecue and served with homemade chips and green salad. Exquisite! You'll enjoy dining in this convivial atmosphere."
The Marché des Producteurs, launched by our Michelin-starred chef Nicolas Magie, offers an opportunity to select ingredients from among the very best in each category, deal directly with producers, and receive tips from Michelin-starred chefs. Just as an enlightened cook works according to seasonality, the chef offers to repeat this event on four Sundays a year. With the changing of the seasons, and under the watchful eye of a guest chef partner for the event, regional products will take pride of place. It’s an opportunity to discover new foods, small producers and to access direct sales of local products.
Be surprised. Everything you think you know about hotels vanishes into thin air as soon as you step through the door.
Starting with the bar, which is home to some great design classics: chairs and sofas by Verner Panton and Charles Eames....Not forgetting the stunning Bergère Louise Crusoé chair, designed by Bleu-Nature, like a nest perched in the trees.
When it comes to the rooms, the famous architect Jean Nouvel chose to highlight white, a symbol of purity and simplicity. The windows are stripped down, adorned only by the views they offer of nature. The bed treats you to a breathtaking spectacle. And for good reason: they change height from one room to the next, offering you uninterrupted views out over the vines once you lie down. Sleeping at the Saint-James is quite an experience!
As soon as it opened, the Saint-James began to focus on culture, arts, architecture and design. With the choice of Jean Nouvel as its architect, of course. But also by commissioning the sculptor César to inaugurate the first sixteen 100-square-metre plots of vines planted on the hotel’s grounds in 1989. Then, over the years, the gallery that links the 18th-century farmhouse to the pavilions has been transformed and converted into a space dedicated to the arts. Multiple exhibitions of paintings, sculptures and photographs are held here every year.
