Awasi, in the north of Chile, is a stunning spot, majestic in its beauty and hidden away in the immense Atacama Desert, the most arid place on earth. This tiny hotel, a cosy and secluded haven in a historic setting, has been designed to fit harmoniously into the local culture and environment. It offers its guests unique ‘bespoke’ experiences and a choice of customised packages and 4x4 excursions with their own guide (a guide is assigned to each guest room). Its ‘all-inclusive’ programme gives the traveller total peace of mind to enjoy a wonderful experience.

Our commitments

While the Atacama Desert seems an unlikely to be a source of biodiversity and inspiring new recipes, Awasi Atacama’s chef Juan Pablo Mardones has found it to be exactly that. Since the hotel opened, he has invested considerable time in studying and searching out local ingredients.
Some, like quinoa and papa morada- a gourmet variety of blue-violet potato - are widely known. But many are native to the region and only grow wild; these include edible algarrobo pods from the carob tree, rosa de año - a flower that blossoms in the desert after the annual rainy season, and one of the chef’s staples: the sweet fruit of the Chilean chañar tree. The chañar is a small, thorny tree that grows exclusively in very dry areas, pervading local culture and folklore as a result of its medicinal properties. The chef, however, uses its principally to delight his guests’ taste buds, deriving an intense syrup, with woody tones, from the tree. This serves as a versatile aromatic base, known as “Arrope de chañar”, which features strongly in Awasi Atacama’s sweet dishes. Moreover, preserving the three corners of South America where the Awasi lodges are located is of utmost importance to the Awasi team. They protect and conserve over 340 hectares (840 acres) of virgin forest and native woodland in Iguazu and Patagonia. These forest areas absorb over 10,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year - a total that is greater than the amount of emissions generated by the three lodges, as well as the airline and transfer travel undertaken by employees and guests. This means Awasi is officially carbon neutral.

Itinerary - Argentina and Chile, along the Andes Mountains

Alexandra Marnier Lapostolle de Bournet's story straddles two continents: Europe and South America. Alexandra is part of the sixth generation to devote themselves to the famous Grand Marnier liqueur, which was created by her great-grandfather in 1880. She went on a long trip to the "New World" in the early 90s with her husband Cyril de Bournet, with the idea of finding new land and producing great wines. Of all the territories they visited, one place particularly fascinated them: Apalta in the Colchagua Valley, Chile... Twenty-five years after discovering this continent, Alexandra Marnier Lapostolle de Bournet gives us her Route du Bonheur, offering the opportunity to discover both sides of the Andes Mountain Range. Such a different mountainous and desert world between Argentina and Chile. As Alexandra points out, on the Argentine side, the Andes descend in a very gentle way, with pink and clear colours. You can admire some of beautiful sunset views over the mountain sides. They create more of a steep relief on the Chilean side. The colours are darker, but the rivers flow towards the Pacific Ocean.
