artists' residence

The Wickaninnish Inn stands on an outcrop between the Pacific Ocean, Chesterman Beach and a forest of giant evergreens. Artists, including renowned wood carver Henry Nolla, designed elements of its two buildings with the aim of blending art, nature and culture. You can even meet local artists at the onsite carving shed. Each room has a fireplace and picture window offering views of the coastline. Set off on a day of sea kayaking, or to see whales, sea lions or bears around Clayoquot Sound. Relax with a soothing spa treatment after your day's adventures. From November to March, you can admire mighty Pacific storms, watching from the comfort of your guest room as waves come crashing ashore.

Our commitments

Set in the heart of Clayoquot Sound, a coastal area designated as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, the Wickaninnish Inn was designed in perfect harmony with nature.
The McDiarmid family built the Wickaninnish Inn, a hotel-restaurant, to be environmentally friendly in order to preserve the natural beauty and integrity of the site classified by UNESCO. Highly committed to responsible tourism, the Maison applies its own environmental charter. Its efforts have been rewarded by obtaining 5 Green Keys from the Green Key Eco-Rating Program, which evaluates and certifies actions that improve the environmental performance of professional lodging facilities in North America.

Carving Shed

In the late 70's, with the help of contractor Don McGinnis and carver Henry Nolla, the McDiarmid family began construction on their Shell Beach cabin. Dr.McDiarmid developed a deep respect and trust for Henry, inviting him to build his own place on property. In his Carving Shed on Chesterman Beach, using tools he designed himself, he completed much of the adze work found throughout the Wickaninnish Inn. Though Henry passed in 2004, his legacy continues in the hub of artisan activity at his carving shed right by the Inn's Beach Building as well as the small Henry Nolla Art Gallery off the Driftwood Café.
