Elizabethan manor
world-renowned English gardengourmet experienceexceptional vegetable garden
Gravetye Manor is a truly enchanting place; both close to the pleasures of London, yet far from its hustle and bustle. This beautiful Elizabethan manor sits proudly amongst the winding pathways and abundant flower beds in the English natural and wild gardens created by William Robinson, the father of the English flower garden and a former owner of the estate. This quintessential English country house’s charm is evident in the wood-panelled sitting rooms with crackling log fires. All year round, the sweeping countryside views, first-class cuisine and attentive yet unobtrusive service ensure an unforgettable experience.
Our commitments
The gardens of Gravetye Manor, considered among the most influential in English gardening history, have been subject to a vast restoration project since 2010.
In order to pay homage to the creative gardening style of William Robinson, creator of the Gravetye Manor gardens, the owners are carrying out important restoration work. The landscaping is being recreated using old photos and drawings from the period to retain its original style and proportions. Authentic Victorian greenhouses have already been reconstructed as well as a vast 6000m2 vegetable garden that provides the restaurant daily with fresh fruit, vegetables and other products.
Around 20 miles from Gravetye Manor, Glyndebourne is a must-visit destination for opera lovers. Founded in 1934, and still run by the same family of music lovers, this exceptional destination in the heart of the English countryside is renowned for the quality of its programming. From mid-May to the end of August, the summer festival delights visitors, especially as it is renowned for picnics in the park. Alternatively, you can enjoy its fine-dining restaurant.
The gardens are the jewel in Gravetye’s crown and cannot be missed. They are historically important and have been restored to their former glory recently. The best way to experience the beautiful gardens is with a guided tour with Head Gardener, Tom Coward and is a fantastic way to spend an hour in an afternoon. Tom give a fascinating view of the garden both past and present and he may even let you into a few little secrets !
