First conceived at the end of the 19th century in Naples, the art of pizza-making was recognized for its contribution to intangible culture by UNESCO in 2017. With the help of a group of passionate scientists and local farmers in the 1960s, Francesco Paolo Avallone worked to revive a local wine that had fallen out of favor at the beginning of the 20th century. A visit to Villa Matilde includes a tour of its vineyards and a tasting of five wines made from Falernum, a grape variety that dates back to Roman times.
