This is a story of love at first sight. That of Markus Friesacher for Namibia, its deserts, its inhabitants, flora and fauna. The owner of the Austrian company Gmundner Keramik, the oldest European ceramics company, opened this lodge in 2022 as an autonomous and sustainable local project. Less than an hour from the capital, Windhoek, Gmundner Lodge combines exquisite refinement with unforgettable immersions in wild, unspoiled nature. With a nod to the luxurious safari camps of adventurers from another era, its suites are housed within large tents. Inside, expect teak flooring, Persian rugs, Chesterfield armchairs, four-poster beds wrapped in mosquito nets, and chests of drawers that resemble travel trunks... Bathtubs are found outside, on the terrace, promising sublime relaxation under the gaze of the animals that pass through these 14,800-acres of Kalahari savannah. The lodge, which has a large swimming pool and spa, runs on solar energy and its farm produces vegetables and fruits served in the restaurant. The lodge seamlessly combines social commitments with the preservation of regional culture and traditions through an art project to support the indigenous San people. Gmundner Lodge is also proudly run by locals, whose inherent and diverse knowledge of Namibia makes for a more meaningful cultural exchange with visitors.

Activities, excursions and other attractions during your stay at Gmundner Lodge
In Austria, the name Gmundner is synonymous with sublime craftsmanship: it is the oldest ceramic factory in Europe, founded in 1492. Proud of its origins and its relationship to the land and traditional artisanship, Gmundner Lodge offers guests the opportunity to paint their own creations. In a dedicated workshop, and guided by a seasoned potter, you can give free rein to your imagination.
Tailor-made safaris are offered at sunrise and at nightfall, when the sky paints the landscape breathtaking colors. Experienced guides, passionate and well-informed about this unique environment, will help you discover the fauna, flora and legends of the Kalahari–arguably the most extensive and fascinating desert in the world–making for a truly unforgettable adventure.
Explore the vast Gmundner estate and its 6,000 hectares of wild nature on horseback along unforgettable trails. Let the beauty of the landscape wash over you, while an experienced guide shares the secrets of the savannah–you will undoubtedly come across herds of grazing springbok, or zebras peacefully exploring the territory. The experience is even more magical at first light, when the sun sets the horizon ablaze.
