The guest rooms open onto private gardens with vistas of palm trees swaying in the breeze against an ocean backdrop. Cape Weligama’s residences and villas sit atop a promontory overlooking the Indian Ocean and enjoy stunning views of idyllic landscapes on all sides. At the seafront, the crescent-shaped infinity pool seems to float above the waves; alongside stone pathways leading to secluded coves where turtles flap about in the crystal-clear shallows. The terracotta-tiled rooftops of the accommodations, designed by renowned architect Lek Bunnag, create the illusion of a traditional Sri Lankan village with generously sized, stylishly furnished interiors.

Our commitments

This property was not born in isolation: the project from which it came also bore two sister foundations; responsible for helping children and local communities live and develop with dignity.
“Business is a matter of human service”, repeats the founder of this property. And annually he puts his words into action with his two foundations: the MJF Charitable Foundation, specialised in social justice, and Dilmah Conservation for environmental protection. Helping women and children from poor areas, setting up early years centres, rebuilding programs after the tsunami, and also founding elephant orphanages and the Dugong protection plan (a marine mammal facing extinction). Protecting the natural and human heritage of the island are the real reasons why this property exists.

Whale and Dolphin Watching

A couple of miles off the South Coast of Sri Lanka sits a migration channel for Blue and Sperm whales. Cape Weligama’s Ocean Safari experience heads out to sea in search of the beautiful and fascinating creatures. With a naturalist onboard, guests enjoy detailed guiding not only about whales, but also marine biodiversity as a whole. During the excursion, sightings of mammals, turtles, fish and other marine life are also common. After leaving the whales, we anchor in the bay of Weligama for breakfast and a swim.

Surf, body board and paddle

Cape Weligama Bay, one of the Indian Ocean’s most famous bays, is known not only for its beauty and historical significance but also for its gentle rolling waves that have made it a haven for surfers. We can help you ride your first wave here; you can enjoy guided body boarding and Stand-Up Paddle boarding, too! This will be a delightful experience – with the added benefit of being a full-body workout

A Day with Giants

Guided by our Cape Weligama naturalist, you will spend a few hours observing wild elephants that Uda Walawe National Park is famous form. The park is also excellent for birdlife, especially raptors and migrant species that escape the European winter. Then, we visit the Elephant Transit home where wild, orphaned elephant calves are cared for and rehabilitated until they are released into the wild.

Faces of Galle Fort

Explore Galle Fort on a hosted walking tour. The walk focuses on the host’s experience of growing up in the Fort and presenting it as an extension of his “home” – a home filled with, history, heritage, cultural integration and soul. Through his eyes and narrative, explore the layers of social fabric of a multi-ethnic melting pot of why Galle Fort is significant to world heritage and earned the title of Unesco World Heritage Site. Your host may bump into other locals who make up the tapestry of personalities that gives the “living” Fort its vibrancy and character. Visit historical points of interests, like ancient churches, mosques and museums, walk the Fort’s ramparts at sunset, and explore the cobblestone streets of one of the most unique places in the world.
